Riverchase Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery is pleased to announce the opening of the Camisa Psoriasis Center at Riverchase, with Phototherapy Treatment Centers in both Fort Myers and Naples, FL.
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that manifests in the skin and joints. It affects about 7.5 million Americans and can cause debilitating symptoms. Until recently, treatment consisted mostly of topical cortisone, vitamin D, and coal tar ointments.
The Camisa Psoriasis Center is named for Charles Camisa, MD, a leading expert in Psoriasis and other complex skin conditions. Dr. Camisa is Board Certified in both Dermatology and Dermatologic Immunology. He is the author of three textbooks on Psoriasis and has also written over 140 peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters on skin and oral diseases. He joined the Riverchase practice early in 2009, bringing over 30 years of experience.
Dr. Camisa believes that the safest and most effective treatment for moderate to severe Psoriasis of the body, palms or soles of feet, is artificial ultraviolet light delivered to the skin in specially-designed booths in the office. "Applying messy ointments to large areas of the body is neither practical nor very effective, takes time, and can be expensive," he said. "There are two exciting new developments in this field. The first is the Xtrac laser which delivers a highly focused beam of ultraviolet light only to the diseased skin. The second consists of injectable antibodies which block the abnormal immune processes that lead to the red scaly patches of skin."
Dr. Camisa specializes in Psoriasis, Bullous Diseases, Connective Tissue diseases, Vitiligo, Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma, and diseases of the mouth and lips. He also discovered and reported a rare genetic disease which now bears the name “Camisa’s Disease.” He has been voted a 2009 “Top Doctors in America” award by Castle Connolly Medical Research.
