Injectables & Fillers - Sculptra™

Sculptra is approved by the FDA for facial fat loss, or lipoatraphy.  The loss of fat between the skin can result in sunken cheeks, indentations, and hollow eyes. Sculptra is a safe, synthetic, biocompatible material that is injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss.  It provides a gradual & significant increase in skin thickness improving the appearance of folds & sunken areas.

What is Sculptra? The main component of Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, which is a biocompatible, (does not harm the body) biodegradable (broken down by the body), material that is a FDA approved treatment for the restoration of the signs of facial fat loss, lipoatrophy. The results of lipoatrophy can result in sunken cheeks, indentations and hollow eyes. Sculptra is a safe and effective way to improve the appearance of folds and sunken in areas of the skin.

How does Sculptra work? Sculptra is injected below the surface of the skin to correct the effects of fat loss by replacing lost volume. The injectable volumizing treatment stimulates the build up of the body’s own collagen and increase skin thickness to replenish the fullness of one’s face. Sculptra has the ability to promote the production of the body’s natural collagen in the treated areas, restoring lost facial volume which will smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, giving the face a fuller, younger look. Visible results will appear within the first few treatments.

Do I need a skin test before I am treated with Sculptra? No a skin test is not required before using Sculptra because it is biocompatible (does not harm the body).

Will I have immediate results from Sculptra? No, you will not have immediate results from Sculptra but at your first visit it may appear that way. You may have swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute the Sculptra. After a few days, once the swelling has gone down and the water is absorbed by your body, you may look the same as you did before the treatment. Sculptra takes time to gradually correct the depression. You will see your physician (Do you want to say Dr. D.?) in a few weeks after the procedure to decide if you will need more Sculptra.

How many treatments will I need to have? Your physician will decide the appropriate number of treatments and the correct amount of Sculptra that you will need. A series of three to five treatments over two to six months may be required to reach your desired results, which is an advantage for those who do not want the appearance of a cosmetic procedure.

How long do Sculptra results last? Results vary for each patient. Clinical studies have proven results can last up to 2 years. Touch up treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effect.

Will injections of Sculptra hurt? Sculptra is injected in small amounts using a very fine needle, but as with many injections, Sculptra may hurt. Your healthcare provider may use a topical or local anesthetic to numb the area.

What can I expect at a treatment session? You will have a consultation with your healthcare provider to answer your questions and to prepare you for you treatment.
• Make up should be removed.
• The area to be injected will be cleaned with antiseptic.
• You and your healthcare provider will make the decision if topical or local anesthetic is needed.
• Sculptra will be injected using a very fine needle. The treatment will require multiple injections.
• An ice pack should be applied to the area to help reduce swelling.
• After the treatment, the area should be thoroughly massaged to distribute the product evenly.

What can I expect after treatment? Immediately following the treatment session of Sculptra, swelling, redness, pain and bruising may occur in the treated area. These signs may go away in a few hours but should not last more than a few days. You should follow the post-care instructions your healthcare provider gives you. The treated area should be massaged for several days after the treatment, several times a day. For the first 24 hours after treatment, an ice pack should be applied to the treated area to help reduce swelling. Avoid putting ice directly on your skin by wrapping the ice in a cloth. Avoid excessive sun and UV lamp exposure until any initial redness and swelling have resolved.

How quickly can I get back to my daily activities? There is little or no downtime with following the Sculptra treatment. Most patients feel comfortable going back to normal activity after treatment.

Can I apply make-up after treatment? Make-up may be applied after treatment if there are no complications present.

What are the possible side effects from treatment with Sculptra? The most common side effects from Sculptra include injection-related side effects at the injection site such as bleeding, tenderness or pain, swelling, redness, or bruising. These side effects generally last 3 to 17 days.

A possible delayed side effect of Sculptra can be small bumps under the skin of the treated area. These bumps may not be visible, and only noticed when you press on the treated skin. The bumps usually occur within the first 6 to 12 months after the first treatment. Occasionally, the bumps go away on their own. With all procedures that required injection through the skin, there is a risk of infection.

Report any side effects to your healthcare provider.

Who should not use Sculptra? You should not use if you are allergic to any ingredient in Sculptra. Discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider when deciding on treatment.
