Liposuction Procedure

Everyone has parts of their body they would like to improve. Even people who diet and work out habitually can have stubborn areas that don't respond. Now more than ever, liposuction is being used to treat such areas. Our cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Willis Eshbaugh, is using the latest techniques in liposuction to treat patients in Naples, Fort Myers and all over southwest Florida.

Liposuction is a term that refers to the surgical removal of fat. It can be used to treat one specific bothersome area, such as the thighs, or it can be used to contour several areas to bring one's body into better harmony. Patients with extreme weight problems often undergo several separate procedures to achieve their goals.

Presently, the most common technique is called tumescent liposuction. It involves injecting fluid with several medications into the area to be suctioned. This decreases bleeding, pain, and bruising. It has been used safely with predictable results. In recent years ultrasonic liposuction has been used with mixed results. It involves melting the fat with ultrasound waves, then removing the fat with standard liposuction. It works well on areas that are more firm, or fibrous, such as breast tissue in males, and the inside of the thighs.

The duration of the operation is dependant upon how much fat is removed and can be anywhere from one to four hours. Recovery can be from one to six weeks, depending on how much fat is removed. One can expect bruising to last up to two weeks, with swelling that begins to improve after a week, but can persist six weeks to three months. During that time a compressive garment is generally used to help with the swelling.

In certain circumstances, fat can be suctioned from one area and injected into another. These fat injections are used to fill in depressions, contour deficient spots, or augment areas such as the buttocks. Smaller injections of fat are being done around the eyes and in the face to restore a more youthful appearance.
